NJSP Warns Public of Phone Scam

NJCCIC Alert

Original Release Date: 2/18/2021

Summary

The New Jersey State Police (NJSP) posted a phone scam alert in which threat actors claim to be NJ State Troopers. The threat actors suggest that the intended victim has been identified as a victim of identity theft and attempts to collect personally identifiable information (PII) such as Social Security number and date of birth for further “verification.” These fraudulent calls appear to come from legitimate phone numbers for the NJSP. The NJSP does not request this type of information.

Recommendations

The NJCCIC urges recipients of these or similarly suspicious communications to refrain from providing personal information and terminate the communication. We also advise victims of PII compromise and identity theft review the NJCCIC informational report Compromised PII: Facilitating Malicious Targeting and Fraudulent Activity. The NJSP requests recipients to report the activity to your local police department or servicing NJSP station.
