NFL Social Media Accounts

NJCCIC Data Breach Notification

Original Release Date: 2/3/2020

Summary

Just one week before Super Bowl LIV, multiple social media accounts of the National Football League (NFL) and approximately 15 NFL teams were compromised. Hacked accounts included the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles, as well as Superbowl competitors, the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers. The hackers, self-identified as the Saudi Arabia-based “white hat” hacking group OurMine, claim that the attacks targeting high-profile groups were an attempt to promote their cybersecurity services. The teams regained control of the accounts shortly after discovery and are working with law enforcement and social media platforms to prevent further unauthorized access. Users are reminded that enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA) is an easy and effective mitigation tool.
