On July 5, the Maryland Department of Labor (MDoL) reported that they suffered a data breach which compromised personally identifying information (PII) of approximately 78,000 customers. The exposed information dated back to 2009 and was housed on the Literacy Works Information System and in a legacy unemployment insurance database. State and local governments are frequently targeted by threat actors to steal data or extort them via ransomware. Maryland residents who believe their data was exposed can visit the MDoL website. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) provides information on protecting your identity.
